Course Title: The Obesity Challenge in Public Health:
Integrating Best Practices into Culturally Competent, Family Centered, Community Solutions- An Interdisciplinary Distance Learning Workshop.
Target Audience:
Nurses, dietitians/nutritionists, exercise physiologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, teachers, case managers, health education specialists, social workers, and school food service professionals are encouraged to register. Educational levels that are required span from introductory to advanced for participation.
Course Description:
This self-paced learning opportunity enables participants to learn from experts in the field of public health.
This workshop is designed to help participants look at obesity in children and adolescents through a public health focus on the family and community, but not solely in individual behavioral terms. The workshop will provide professionals with insight into developing and evaluating strategies that are grounded in a clear understanding of the effects of culture, education, poverty, community (rural-urban-suburban), behavioral settings, and external factors.
Topics include:
- Promoting Healthy Lifestyles: Effects of Overweight/Obesity on Health Status
- Health Disparities and Relation to Overweight/Obesity
- Evidence-Based Research and Best Practices in Treatment of Pediatric and Adolescent Overweight/Obesity
- Understanding Culture in Health Promotion
- School Wellness Policy: What Does It Look Like in Real Life?
- Case studies and model programs
The workshop is divided into 4 modules each awarding from 2.5 to 3.5 contact hours of continuing education. To receive a certificate of completion you must complete the pre-test, post-test, case study analysis, and evaluation components.

How to Receive Continuing Education Credit for this Workshop:
All modules provide continuing education with a certificate of completion. Discipline-specific pre-approved continuing education has been approved for RD and OT. Discipline-specific pre-approved continuing education is in the process of pre-approval for nursing, PT, CCM, and CHES.
Contact hours of continuing education:
- Module 1 - 3.5 contact hours
- Module 2 - 3.0 contact hours
- Module 3 - 2.5 contact hours
- Module 4 - 2.5 contact hours
To receive a certificate of completion for module 1 you must complete the pre-test, post-test, and evaluation components of the module.
To receive a certificate of completion for module 2 you must complete the pre-test, post-test, case study analysis, and evaluation components.
To receive a certificate of completion for modules 3 and 4 you must complete the pre-test, post-test, model program review and analysis, and evaluation components of the modules.
When you have completed a module, send an e-mail message to disteducation@utk.edu with the subject line: Obesity Challenge and in the body of the message indicate which module you have completed.
The development of this independent study opportunity was funded by a grant awarded to the Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities.
Thanks to the grant, there is no cost to register for each module. However, nurses will be assessed a $10 administrative fee for each module if they wish to earn continuing education units (CEUs).
Length:
The time it takes you to go through the workshop will depend on your own time flexibility. It can take anywhere from 20-30 hours. As you participate in the workshop activities you will be viewing text, images, and video clips on-screen. You will also be linking to documents and Web sites. It is a self-paced course; you can start or stop at any time, and resume later.
