Independent Study Dual Enrollment

Tennessee High School Seniors seeking dual enrollment at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville

"Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant program is defined as a grant for study at an eligible postsecondary institution that is funded from net proceeds of the state lottery and awarded to students who are attending high school and who are also enrolled in college courses at eligible postsecondary institutions for which they will receive college credit." Selected courses must meet high school graduation standards and be approved by your high school's principal or counseling staff.

To receive the grant reimbursement for Independent Study courses offered through the Department of Distance Education and Independent Study you must follow these steps in sequence:

  1. Review and fully meet all the conditions as outlined by the state in the Dual Enrollment Grant form.*
  2. Apply for Dual Credit Enrollment to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, by completing the Dual Enrollment Grant form* and submitting it to Ms. Norma Harrington, Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions, (nharring@utk.edu), (865) 974-2184, fax (865) 974-4689, or mail to 320 Student Services Building, University of Tennessee, Knoxviile, TN 37996-0230. Deadlines for the completed enrollment process are September 1, for fall; February 1, for spring; May 1, for summer.
  3. Once the application is accepted, enroll in the Independent Study courses you have designated on the Dual Enrollment Grant form by the applicable deadline. NOTE: The entire application and enrollment process must be by the applicable deadline. Thus, you should submit the required forms at least two weeks before the printed deadline listed above to ensure adequate time for processing and enrollment.

Unlike most Independent Study courses, you must follow the regular, semester-based academic calendar for the university. You will not have nine months to finish the course. Thus, you must have completed the course with sufficient time for grading and processing so that your final grade is posted no later than Noon (Eastern Time) on May 15, 2007 (for spring enrollment); August 14, 2007 (for summer enrollment); or December 18, 2007 (for fall enrollment). See the summary table of deadlines, below.

You may receive reimbursement up to $300 per semester with a total possible reimbursement from the State of no more than $600 during any award year.

The tuition reimbursement will only be issued upon your successful completion of the course (you must maintain a 2.75 GPA in the courses taken for dual enrollment to receive the reimbursement).
